Mother and son’s cow elk hunt

C Roper

On the last day of my son’s (Trevor Bosman’s) cow elk hunt he called me very disparate. " Mom I don't have a vehicle to go out hunting I have been trying to go out on my racing quad but it's to loud". Luckily for him my job had called a snow day and we could go hunting. So I asked my fiancé Dan Bix if we could use his truck and rifle and of course he said yes.

The next morning we headed for the Stoneman Lake area. It had just snowed the day before so we had two feet on the ground. And there were a lot of hunters which made me nervous as they had been in the area for the last week and I felt our chances were pretty slim.

Heading off the beaten path for about five miles, that’s when we saw signs of elk crossing the road. We left the truck and started our hike. We had not gone to far when we spotted a herd of a hundred plus and they were on the move.

Trevor spotted a cow and fired two shots, she ran up the hill and piled up in the biggest oak scrub you could imagine, getting it out would be a task.

We did not have a quad to get her back to the truck which was now a ½ mile away. So my son (Trevor) called a friend and asked him to bring his quad. It would be an hour and a half before he would arrive.

As Trevor’s mom this was my first kill hunt I had ever been on and had no idea on what to do. All I remember was my fiancé telling me, was gut it first or it will go bad. While we waited, I called my fiancé Dan Bix who just happens to be a licenced hunting guide and knows how to cut meat. With multiple phone calls he lead me though the steps on how to gut and field dress my first animal.

I was covered in blood but never notice it as it was keeping my hands warm along with the adrenalin rush of my son (Trevor) killing his cow elk.

I'm so proud of my son and can’t wait for him to get drawn again.
